Our group of adventurers- Zer, Kazane, Katarina and Tael- find themselves in the settlement of Sandpoint on the day of the consecration of its new cathedral. Before we get to the meat of our adventure, I believe I should introduce you to our aspiring squad of troublemakers.
Zer is a young tough of mixed human descent native to Sandpoint. Quiet, witty and at times morbid, he is a muscle of the group and is always spoiling for a fight. After tasting first blood on his first goblin, he’s hungry for more. His favored weapon is the greatsword, which he uses to great effect.
Kazane is a mysterious sorceress from parts unknown. Constantly shrouded in a veil, she is tall for a female and even manages to collect the wind around her- intentionally or unintentionally.
Katarina is a half-elven rogue, who has a quick tongue and is partial to blade and poison. She always keeps an eye out for the odd trap… or goblin.
Tael rounds out the group as an oracle of Gorum, intentionally or not. His clouded eyes may not reach very far, but his scarf manages to. His penchant for iron weaponry and healing magic has aided the group greatly thus far.
The four were not aware of one another at the beginning of the festival, and thus were separate for most of the festival. Beginning the ceremony was the opening speeches, which were from Mayor Deverin, Zantus the High Priest, Sheriff Hemlock and Cyrdak Drokkus- the local theater’s proprietor. Short and sweet, these lead into the day’s events, which were tests of skill. Each of the adventurers took part in at least one, excluding Kazane, who watched. Our heroes were successful in each of their attempts, defeating the townsfolk handily.
Next was the meal, where each of the local taverns provided food for the occasion. Ameiko Kaijitsu stole the show once more with her curry-spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead. The Hagfish and White Deer each made their own names heard, however. Following quickly after, everyone gathered in the square before the cathedral to chat and wait for the consecration ceremony.
With a boom and a flash, the ceremony begins… except for the screams! A nearby dog was slain by a small, cackling green creature. The party heard a cackling tune start up as well:
“Goblins chew and goblins bite.
Goblins cut and goblins fight.
Stab the dog and cut the horse,
Goblins eat and take by force!
Goblins race and goblins jump
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!
Chase the baby, catch the pup.
Bonk the head to shut it up.
Bones be cracked, flesh be stewed,
We be goblins! You be food!"
Needless to say, our heroes were a bit unnerved by the fanatical show. Most of the villagers fled the scene, but not our four champions. Quickly engaging the three admittedly distracted goblins, a brief combat left each goblin on the floor leaking blood. Catching their breath, the adventurers eye each other but say nothing as a cart bursts into flames as a squad of goblins burst forth: three minions and a warchanter! Each minion is wielding a torch and the cackling warchanter a whip.
Our heroes sustain quite a number of wounds from this group, but manage to take them down, although Zer was taken out for a couple moments by a strange laughter overcoming his mind. Father Zantus was quick to aid the heroes, sending out a burst of healing energy to close their wounds. Thanking them, he moves to a nearby group of refugees to aid them as well.
After a few goblins succeed in only committing accidental suicide by mistake, but the group gets another breather before they hear a scream and a growl from the northeastern gate. They rush to the scene only to find a goblin commando pulling his dogslicer from the corpse of a noble’s loyal hound. Said noble-Aldern Foxglove- is cowering behind a nearby barrel. With a cheer, the commandos’ three brethren who were busy hiding behind it emerge, and draw their dogslicers as they cackle, advancing on the defenseless man.
That is, until they are ambushed and quickly slaughtered by our friendly adventurers! After only two or three rounds of combat, the mounted commando, his goblin dog and the the goblin posse are all down for the count. The heroes converge on Foxglove, checking his status to confirm he is okay. He thanks them for saving his life before offering them a reward and perhaps some more excitement if they meet him at the Rusty Dragon. He especially comments on Katarina, but comes off as more of a flirt.
The goblins slain or gone, the group seeks out healing from Father Zantus before heading to the Rusty Dragon on the south side of town. Ameiko greets each of the four as they enter, extending them free room and board for a week for aiding in the defense of the town. The group readily accepts before heading to the Foxglove’s booth. Each receives a pouchful of 50 gold pieces and an offer to join the noble on a boar hunt with his three man servants in the morning. Tael and Katarina accept, while Zer says he may, but Kazane declines the offer graciously.
Dawn comes, and Katarina and Zer show up, Tael sleeping in by mistake. Katarina is ready to ride, but Zer takes a suspicious stance, asking the noble what his game is, and other questions of the sort. The noble blinks but can’t respond very well to the interrogation, and slips away with his small group of hunters. The hunt is uneventful, with the group quickly dispatching a boar and bringing it home to the Rusty Dragon.
